7 Essential Tips for Getting Your Body Ready for Summer

bathing suit season

Remember when you actually looked forward to going to the beach? You would build sand castles, collect shells, and enjoy a picnic in the sun. Now you cower beneath your cover-up or skip beach days all together. Don’t give up on one of your favorite summer activities because you don’t love the skin you’re in. Every body is beautiful, no matter what shape or size you are. These tips will help you feel more confident when it’s time to rock a swimsuit.

Clean up your diet

You don’t need to do a juice cleanse or eat salad for every meal in order to get a great beach body. We simply recommend cleaning up your diet by making some simple swaps for healthier meals (even when going out to eat) and ditching sugary drinks. One of our favorite ways to prepare for bikini season is to organize our kitchen to remove the junk food that’s still lurking in our cabinets. Although you don’t have to count calories, focus on eating more whole grains and unprocessed foods. Eating a cleaner diet not only helps you shed a few pounds but will also give you healthy skin and plenty of energy for all those fun summer activities.

Have a spa day

This tip is good for the body and soul. When was the last time you took the time to take care of yourself? Sure you have some “me time” at the gym a few times a week, but it’s time to relax. You don’t have to dish out hundreds of dollars to be pampered at the salon. A cozy night in is all you need. Give yourself a pedicure so you can admire your toes. Exfoliating your skin will give you a healthy glow. Bonus points for applying a gradual self tanner afterwards. Did you know that having a tan helps bring out muscle definition and hide cellulite? That’s why all body builders and bikini models are always bronzed up.

Get into a routine

The lazy days of summer are almost upon us, but before you ditch your planner, hear us out. A body in motion stays in motion, so don’t forget to keep penciling in your workouts between vacations and neighborhood cookouts. Even if you’re constantly bouncing from work to picking up your kids from summer camp, you can still accomplish your fitness goals.

Take time to tone

Suns out, guns out. If you’re like most Americans, you’re terrified of tank top season because you think you have flabby arms. In order to get rid of your bat wings, you need to start training like Batman. While you can’t spot reduce your problem areas, strength training will help much more than wearing long sleeves at the beach. Don’t know where to get started? Book an appointment with a personal trainer or check out a strength group fitness class.

Amp up your cardio

Once you’ve worked on building long, lean muscles, it’s time to amp up your cardio routine. We promise that you have abs underneath there somewhere. If you’re crunched for time, here’s how you can burn 500 calories in an hour or less. Not in the mood to slave away on the elliptical? Spice up your workout with these calorie-scorching cardio group fitness classes.

Mix up your workouts

Mixing up your routine is crucial because it staves off boredom and helps you achieve results faster. Your muscles get used to the motions, and after a while, they burn fewer calories. Before you hit a weight loss plateau, spice up your workout with a spin class or (if you’re up for a challenge!) sign up for a bootcamp class.

Treat yourself

When you’re working this hard, you need to reward yourself once in a while. No, not with a slice of pizza. Make your treat something that will motivate you to achieve your goals. We recommend splurging on a new bathing suit that’s perfect for your body type or springing for a beach getaway!
